January 2015: Preparing the pilot project in Ethiopia

During January 2015, SSDE held a national conference on eco-municipality in Addis Abeba. The main purpose of it was to anchor the ecomunicipality program among national and international actors.

There were representatives from :

  • governmental departments and agencies
  • international and national contributors and donors
  • international and national NGO’s
  • participating ecomunicipalities
  • provincial governments
  • participating universities
  • SSDE and SSA

Then, regional workshops were held in Mekelle (Tigray region), Bahir Dar (Amhara region) and Dodola (Oromya region). This time, the purpose was to prepare the implementation of the ecomunicipality program, and to share knowledge and skills about sustainable development.

The participants were from :

  • participating ecomunicipalities
  • regional governmental departments and agencies
  • regional universities
  • NGO’s and Business organizations in the region
  • SSDE and SSA

Finally, Mekelle University in the region of Tigray (Ethiopia) held a conference named “Eco-municipality in the region of Tigray” with the members of SSDE and in collaboration with Tigrai Regional Health Bureau, Mekelle City Administration and Tigrai Bureau of Urban Development Trade and Industry. The goal was to talk about the Pilot Project for Eco-municipalities in Ethiopia, and in particular for the development of the Tigray region.

The theme of the conference was “Linking knowledge to Policy and Action for Sustainable Development and Waste Management”. During the conference several issues were addressed :
